Izzy wizzy, let’s get busy

Jumping Jehoshaphat! Warrior Priest has won a Gemmell award! I’m still a little ‘tired and emotional’ from a fantastic evening at London’s Magic Circle HQ, but I have just enough brain cells left to upload a few pics to prove I’m not lying.

After a reading by James Barclay, Stan Nicholls and Anne Gay read out the nominees. There were almost a thousand votes cast for the Morningstar shortlist, from 53 countries.

When Warrior Priest was announced as the winner, I grabbed the sparkly award and legged it before Juliet McKenna had chance to notice she’d read the wrong name out. Note my clever impersonation of a terrified waxwork.

I then hid myself in the bowels of the Magic Circle HQ, just behind a cabinet containing Actual. Genuine. Sooty.

London’s most magical venue turned out to be full of bizarre exhibits. I’m not exactly sure what this is, but I can assure you it was bloody terrifying.

Here I am treating Phil Kelly, Graham McNeill (the winner of last year’s Legend award) and Christian Dunn to some glasses of complimentary booooze.

Spooky wizard stairs.

Later on, a photograph of Tommy Cooper cast a spell that enabled his stuffed dog to possess me. Yes, that really is Tommy Cooper’s fez.

Thanks to everyone who voted for me and to the organisers for putting on such a brilliant event!

Hoorah for Wazza Priest! Well done clever clogs!

I think I should win an award for capturing the Tommy Cooper dog possession incident as it happened. When do you think it’s going to wear off?

Well done Dazzy, to a real life wizard from just plain old wizard!

Did you like my fab fez joke?

  3. d says:

Yes. I liked the joke so much, I’m going to repeat it here:

    Q. What’s a gathering of hat fanciers called?
    A. A feztival.

  4. Rowland Cox says:

Well done sir! Looking sharp 🙂

  5. Hi Darius,

I’ve been lurking on your blog since I read Warrior Priest. I loved the book, and your win is inspiring. I recently scored a couple of short story slots with BL, and I hope to one day follow in your footsteps!

Big congrats for a well deserved award!

  6. Congratulations!

And I always wondered how you spelt ‘Jehoshaphat’. 😉
